Merino sheep producers will benefit from the work of a PhD student at The University of Western Australia.

Andrew Kennedy is examining the trade-off between breeding sheep for meat production and ewes' maternal efficiency. His study aims to quantify the influence of selecting sheep with both meat and wool traits on the ewes' maternal efficiency and how this affects farm profit per hectare.

The Department of Agriculture and Food WA is supporting Mr Kennedy's study at UWA, for which he has also received a scholarship from the Sheep Cooperative Research Centre.

Mr Kennedy said during the next three years, his work would focus on developing a better understanding of this breeding strategy and how it affected overall farm profits.
