Congratulations to HMS staff member Dr Jilen Patel and student Rahul Jegatheva who are finalists for the 2019 Seven News WA Young Achiever Awards.
The purpose of the WA Young Achiever Awards is to acknowledge, encourage and promote the positive achievements of all young people (29 years and under). Each category winner is rewarded with a prize and trophy, as well as being nominated for the overall WA Young Achiever of the Year Award who receives an additional prize and state trophy.
Dr Jilen Patel – Community Service & Volunteering Award
Dr Patel is a specialist paediatric dentist and senior lecturer in clinical dentistry at the UWA Dental School. He is also commencing his PhD to explore approaches to Indigenous dental care, the perceptions of oral health among Aboriginal Australians living in the Kimberley as well as volunteers and workers serving these communities.
The Community Service and Volunteering Award acknowledges those who are energetically and passionately getting involved in their community and making a difference.
Rahul Jegatheva – Sports Award
Rahul Jegatheva is a 1st Year Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences student with a Direct Pathway to the Master of Pharmacy. He is a gold and silver medallist for the Triathlon Multisport World Championships in Aquathlon.
Rahul has twice finished on the podium at the International Triathlon Union World Aquathlon Championships, taking the world title in Canada in 2017 and silver in Denmark in 2018. He is a two-time National Aquathlon Champion in the 19&U age group and a previous winner of the WA Open Water race series for his age. Rahul qualified for the National Championships in Open Water Swimming and Cross Country Running in 2016, 2017 and 2018. He is also undefeated in the Aquathlon discipline across the Open/Elite age group in all races in WA which goes back more than three years across more than 35 races.
The Sports Award acknowledges and supports the ambition and hard work of athletes, coaches, officials and sports administrators. Whether it’s competing, coaching, administration or education, this Award seeks to applaud an individual’s talent, community contribution and to recognise their commitment in the pursuit of excellence.
The winners will be announced at a gala presentation on25 May 2019.
