Indigenous leaders from across Australia will come together for the Indigenous Business, Enterprise and Corporations Conference, to be held at The University of Western Australia on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 December.

Conference speakers will include Ben Wyatt MLA, Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, respected Indigenous business leader Wayne Bergmann, Professor Marcia Langton, scholar and advocate, and leading lawyer Terri Janke.

Among topics up for discussion will be the future of Australia’s north: the area which comprises 40 per cent of Australia’s land mass and houses enormous mineral and cultural wealth.

Indigenous Australians own, control or manage 80 per cent of the country’s north. Conference co-chair Professor Paul Flatau, Director of the Centre for Social Impact UWA, said it was imperative that Indigenous land managers had access to good business structures, technology and advice.

“There is a huge opportunity for Aboriginal communities to benefit from the opportunities being exposed here but also huge risk,” Professor Flatau said.

“The information coming through is that they want to conserve and preserve their assets for future generations, but also want to reap some economic benefits right now.”

Other conference streams will explore Indigenous innovation, Native Title, culture and arts, Indigenous women in business, natural resource management, and Indigenous communities and enterprises.

The Conference is expected to attract 400 delegates from the Indigenous business, government, and corporate sectors, as well as academia.

The Indigenous Business, Enterprise and Corporations Conference will take place at the UWA Business School on 1 and 2 December. Tickets are available to the public at www.ibecc.org.au
