The University of Western Australia congratulates the State Liberal and Labor parties for supporting new laws to bring the Crawley campus of the State’s oldest university entirely within the City of Perth.

The State Government’s City of Perth Act was passed in the Legislative Assembly last night which will allow for the expansion of the City of Perth’s boundaries to include UWA and the QE2 medical precinct.

The Premier and the Leader of the Opposition are to be congratulated for their vision and leadership on this issue.

The Bill will now be considered by the Upper House of State Parliament. The University of Western Australia encourages members of the Legislative Council to do the right thing and support the legislation when it is presented for debate in the near future.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Paul Johnson said the move would help the University to advance its position as an international centre of excellence in world-class education and research.

The University’s 53-hectare Crawley campus is currently subject to three separate local council jurisdictions – Nedlands, Subiaco and Perth – with the boundary between Cities of Perth and Subiaco running through the middle of Winthrop Hall.

“Adopting a more rational system of local government across the whole campus is vital for UWA’s ongoing development as a world-class centre of excellence in advanced learning and research,” Professor Johnson said.

“The University congratulates the State Government on recognising the significant need for local government reform in this area.

“It will benefit Perth and the entire Western Australian community by helping UWA achieve its full potential as the leading international university in one of the world’s best cities.”
