The largest cohort of Indigenous students to date has graduated from The University of Western Australia's School of Indigenous Studies.

Around 150 students, family and friends attended the graduation ceremony last Friday to see 38 undergraduate and postgraduate students from around Australia receive their certificates.

The numbers represent an 80 per cent increase compared to the previous year.  Among them were graduates from law, engineering, medicine, science, commerce, arts and education.

Five were also the first students to complete the School's Indigenous Knowledge, History and Heritage major.

Marilyn Strother, Director of Indigenous Student Services at the School of Indigenous Studies, said the graduates exemplified the success of the School's programs.

"We are immensely proud," Ms Strother said.  "These fine graduates are equipped with the best knowledge, practice and professional capacity to impact on community, industry and culture.  They are a credit to UWA and an inspiration to our future Indigenous students."

At the same ceremony, 28 students graduated from the School's 12-month Aboriginal Orientation Course.  These students are now ready to enrol in UWA's undergraduate program.

More than 230 Indigenous students from all over Australia were enrolled at UWA in 2014.
