Little did graduate Nadia Okis know that the Japanese language lessons she took at The University of Western Australia would come in handy occasionally to help her with Police work.

And while her Japanese has only been useful three times in the eight years she has been in the WA Police, she credits studying for her Bachelor of Arts with helping her to ‘think outside the square' and to write reports.

Detective Okis, who has recently joined Western Suburbs Detectives in Claremont, also enjoyed Italian and History at UWA.

"I always wanted to study at UWA because my father studied Engineering at UWA," she said.

After graduating, she worked in administration in the private and public sector for more than two years before deciding to pursue her long-time interest in police work.

"I knew it would be a career where I could help people," she said. "It's also a career in which you get close to your colleagues. You have to be supportive of each-other."

Detective Okis has enjoyed several roles in her eight years including in traffic, general duties, the child abuse squad and major fraud.

She intends to stay in the WA Police as she enjoys the diversity of her career.
