A team of academics and PhD students from UWA Centre for Energy have attended the Chemeca 2013 Conference, held in Brisbane, from the 29th of September to the 2nd of October. Chemeca provides an excellent forum for academia, industry and professional bodies in chemical engineering to share their research and to discuss the future of the profession.

Winthrop Professor Dongke Zhang FTSE, Director of the Centre for Energy, was a keynote speaker and has delivered an inspiring talk on “The Peculiar Things about Energy and Why They Matter”. UWA Centre for Energy was well represented at the conference this year with 11 attendees, presenting 8 papers (as below):

  • Effect of Temperature on Pyrolysis Products of a Pine Sawdust in an Indirectly Fired Rotary Kiln by: Mingming Zhu, Wenxu Zhou, Zhezi Zhang, Jianbo Li and Dongke Zhang
  • Effect of Temperature and Heating Rate in Pyrolysis on the Yield, Structure and Oxidation Reactivity of Pine Sawdust Biochar by: Zhezi Zhang, Setyawati Yani, Mingming Zhu, Jianbo Li and Dongke Zhang
  • Ordered Mesoporous Alumina Supported Potassium Carbonate as Solid Base Catalysts for Biodiesel Production by: Wei Wu, Wan Chen, Hong Yang and Dongke Zhang
  • Effect of Crystal Size of ZSM-5 on its Catalytic Activity for Methanol to Gasoline Conversion by: Zhijian Wan, Chuanfu Wang, Hong Yang and Dongke Zhang
  • Leaching Properties of a Biochar Derived from a Western Australia Pine Plantation by: Victor Tay, Hong Yang, Wenxu Zhou and Dongke Zhang
  • The Effect of Biochar Application in Microalgal Culture on the Biomass Yield and Cellular Lipids of Chlorella vulgaris by: Emma Magee, Wenxu Zhou, Hong Yang, Dongke Zhang
  • Metabolic Engineering of Arabidopsis Plant to Produce Triterpenoid Hydrocarbons for Biofuel by: Wenxu Zhou, Jing Li, Steven M. Smith, Dongke Zhang
  • Behaviours of Kaolin Suspensions with Different Polyacrylamide (PAM) Flocculants under Shear by: Lavanya Avadiar, Yee-Kwong Leong, Andy Fourie and Tutun Nugraha
