Teams from more than 30 Western Australian schools are gearing up for the 2013 Model Solar Challenge at The University of Western Australia from 9am-2pm on Friday October 25.

The Challenge for primary and secondary school students aims to promote the study of engineering and help participants become ‘renewable energy ambassadors' through hands-on engineering and science-based fun activities.

Student teams will race solar-powered model boats (primary students) and cars (secondary students) in specially designed tanks and tracks.

They were given specific requirements to build their vehicles and will be judged on the performance of their entries and knowledge of the concepts and techniques used to build and power them.

The top four teams from next week's event at UWA will be invited to represent WA nationally in Melbourne next month.

The Challenge has run for the past two decades and was brought to UWA for the first time last year.  Tens of thousands of school students have participated since the Challenge was launched in 1992.

Competition is a great motivator and students always show huge enthusiasm in participating.
