A PhD student from The University of Western Australia will take on the world's best young speakers in the global final of the Institution of Engineering and Technology's Present around the World (PATW) 2013 competition after winning the Asia-Pacific Regional competition in Brunei last week.

Kelsey Kennedy, who is undertaking her PhD at UWA's Optical and Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, claimed first place at the Asia Pacific Regional competition with her presentation, "Imaging the Mechanical Properties of Breast Cancer".

Kelsey's research involves developing an optical imaging technique that creates high-resolution images based on the mechanical properties of tissues.  She is working on generating contrast between healthy tissue and tumour in breast tissues, with the aim of providing improved guidance for breast cancer surgery and is part of the UWA team that has been nominated for this Wednesday night's prestigious Eureka Awards .

As well as representing the Asia-Pacific region at the PATW global finals in London in November, Kelsey will also take on student finalists from around Australia and New Zealand as UWA's representative in the Trans-Tasman Three Minute Thesis competition to be held in Sydney in October.

PATW is the Institution of Engineering and Technology's presentation competition for young engineers and technicians aged 18 to 26 years from all over the world.

For the Asia-Pacific region, young speakers representing countries such as Australia, Brunei Darussalam, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand went head to head in presenting their innovation-motivated technical work for a chance to represent the region in the Global finals of PATW 2013.

Individual competitors gave a 10-minute presentation on a subject related to engineering and technology, followed by five minutes of questions.

They were judged by a panel based on their capabilities and knowledge of their subject as well as their ability to answer questions satisfactorily.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology is one of the world's leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, with more than 150,000 members in 127 countries and offices in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.
