Much of the leadership potential in organisations is underused or wasted, an international expert will tell a Karratha Leaders' Luncheon for mining, business and community leaders hosted by The University of Western Australia tomorrow.

UWA Business School's Woodside Chair in Leadership and Management, Winthrop Professor David Day, says that for every effectively functioning leader, there are another 5-10 potential leaders who have never led or thought that they could lead.

The vital importance of developing local leadership in the resources-rich Pilbara - and wider Australia - forms a key part of this week's UWA Gives Back Pilbara Tour presented by the UWA Business School during the University's 2013 Centenary Year.

The tour also features high school visits by UWA experts, student and graduates to encourage students to consider tertiary studies.

The UWA Business School sees maximising leadership potential as critical for the Pilbara, which is responsible for 5.7 per cent of the nation's gross domestic product in a region in which the population is expected to more than double in the next 20 years.

Professor Day is internationally renowned in leadership development and has helped major organisations, including the US Army, Singapore Armed Forces, global Indian IT firm Infosys Technologies and major Australian listed company Wesfarmers.

At tomorrow's Leaders' Luncheon in Karratha, Professor Day will outline what it takes for everyone to better prepare themselves as a leader.

UWA's Pilbara tour also includes former Newman Senior High School student James McClements, who now oversees more than $3 billion in international business investments for a business he co-founded - Resource Capital Funds (RCF).

Mr McClements will join the Leaders' Luncheons and host informal student discussions in Karratha, Port Hedland and Newman on how to be an effective leader in the classroom, workplace and community.

The July 1-5 UWA Gives Back Pilbara Tour is supported by BHP Billiton, Woodside and Resource Capital Funds.
