Two engineering students at The University of Western Australia are the newest recipients of the 35-year-old Clough Scholars program, which was revived last year after an eight-year sabbatical.

Joel Valli and Jessica Regan, who are in their penultimate year of a combined degree program, were recognised last night at a Clough Scholars reunion dinner at UWA.

Initiated by former Clough Limited (Clough) chairman and managing director Dr Harold Clough in 1969, the program reaffirms the longstanding relationship between Clough and the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at UWA, which has awarded more than 200 scholarships to the brightest engineering students in WA.  Past recipients include top government , business and resource industry leaders.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson said the University was indebted to Dr Harold Clough and his family for their very generous ongoing and long-term support.

"We are delighted to have been able to host this celebration of the achievement of Clough Scholars and the contribution of Harold and his family, whose links to UWA go back more than 60 years," Professor Johnson said.

Winthrop Professor John Dell, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics said the students would be provided with an unparalleled opportunity to receive financial support and the opportunity to start their professional career with an internationally renowned global engineering firm.

Clough CEO and Managing Director Kevin Gallagher said the quality of applicants for the Clough program was extremely high.

‘We are very pleased to be working closely with a great institution like UWA further strengthening the Clough brand for high quality engineering," Mr Gallagher said.

"Clough Scholars will be guaranteed summer internship and graduate positions at Clough although they are not obliged to take up these positions.  While some Clough Scholars are our longest-serving employees, others have gone on to hold influential positions in other business firms, or industry and government, a tradition we are proud to be continuing at Clough Limited."
