A new facility in Geraldton will provide state-of-the-art simulation training for healthcare staff and students.

The $3.7 million Simulation Education Centre, known as EdSim, is being built at the Combined Universities Centre for Rural Health (CUCRH) site.

Edsim will include two clinical demonstration beds, five multi-purpose consultation rooms, tutorial spaces, offices and a number of student work stations.

CUCRH Director Winthrop Professor Sandra Thompson, from The University of Western Australia, said the new centre would allow students completing clinical and community-based placements in outlying regional areas to gain support and training through a central hub.

"Edsim will help CUCRH boost its training and support activities for health staff and students. With the core of the Centre's technology routed to the NBN (rolling out this year), this will open up a whole new dimension for creating reliable support channels to the regions," Professor Thompson said.

"The value of simulation training in healthcare has increased exponentially over recent years. We hope that by offering the highest quality up-to-date industry training opportunities for our health workforce and students on placements, they will be more likely to continue their careers in the country."

The project has been funded through the Federal Government's Department of Health and Ageing and the State Government Department of Regional Development and Lands' Royalties for Regions program.

CUCRH aims to improve rural, remote and Indigenous health through excellence in applied scholarly research, innovative health education programs and community service. UWA, Curtin University, The University of Notre Dame, Edith Cowan University and Murdoch University are centre partners.
