Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett, Australian Defence Minister Steven Smith, Australia's Ambassador to the United States of America Kim Beazley and Chancellor of The University of Western Australia Michael Chaney will be among the high profile West Australians who will lead the next In the Zone conference.

The second phase of the successful In The Zone conference series was launched at The University of Western Australia today.

UWA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Robson, said last year's inaugural In The Zone event had galvanised the Perth-based global business community and brought a high level of foreign policy and economic dialogue to WA, the nation's leading economy.

"In The Zone has been designed to reflect what we see as one of our State's greatest advantages - the fact that we operate in the same time zone as 60 per cent of the world's population and in the same zone as the nations promising the greatest economic growth of the 21st century," Professor Robson said.

In 2011, Perth will take its place on the world stage as host of the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and associated multilateral meetings including the Commonwealth Business, Youth and Community Forums.  The Australian-American Leadership Dialogue will also be held in Perth next year, focusing on security, prosperity and common culture between our two countries.

"UWA will host a full In the Zone conference in 2012, to build upon themes that emerge from these high-level summits," Professor Robson said.

Copies of Professor Robson's speech are available on request.
