A senior administrative officer who has worked at The University of Western Australia for 33 years is one of eight finalists in the National Safety Awards for his contribution to safety at work.

Mr Rob Greenhalgh of UWA's Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics won one of only two individual awards in the 2009 Work Safety Awards WA and is now in the running for the Individual Category in the national competition which concludes in Canberra on April 28.

Mr Greenhalgh, who has also been a voluntary safety officer for 15 years, won the award for developing and maintaining safe systems in an environment where students and staff face hazards such as rotating machinery parts, chemicals, flammable and toxic gases, cryogenics and lasers.

UWA Safety and Health Manager Michael Rafferty said the award was well deserved: "Rob has put tremendous energy into establishing and maintaining safety and health over many years.  He has worked tirelessly to develop and maintain safe systems of work and establish a sound safety culture.  He has actively involved staff and students in hazards identification, assessment and control."

"The efforts for which I am being acknowledged were stimulated by the superb example set by the UWA Safety and Health Office which has had an enormous impact on safety culture across the University, Mr Greenhalgh said

"UWA has a student population of 20,000 from 80 countries and a staff of 4,500 and we have a moral, ethical and legal responsibility to ensure their safety and wellbeing.  There's an enormous range of hazards across campus so safety has to be our prime concern."
