The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has awarded $448,022 to the University of Western Australia for equipment grants for 2009. The amount has been calculated by allocating funds pro rata to the NHMRC health and medical research grants held by UWA in 2009.

The NHMRC has emphasised the need for Institutions to be strategic in the purchase of larger items of equipment and applications are now invited for equipment grants under this scheme.

A UWA committee will be convened to assess the applications and the following factors will be taken into consideration when making decisions on the equipment to be supported. Please note that this is a competitive process, with applications assessed against these selection criteria.

Selection Criteria

  • Items of equipment must be worth more than $20,000. Preference will be given to medium sized pieces of equipment and facilities which are not project specific. Funding may be requested for a series of small items that must collectively be worth greater than $20,000 (e.g. water baths, small centrifuges).
  • The equipment should support high quality health and medical research, as evidenced by NHMRC or other competitive grant support.
  • A clear case of need must be established. The scheme is not intended to duplicate existing equipment. Lack of access to similar equipment in the institution or region can be used to establish a need for a particular item of equipment.
  • Degree of collaborative use of the equipment e.g. multi-user equipment which crosses disciplines, research groups and schools.
  • Australian-made equipment should be selected where possible

Priority will be given to applications from recipients of current NHMRC and other medical grants. Some funds may be available to support applications from early career researchers.

Closing Date: 5:00pm Friday, 20 November 2009
