The University of Western Australia has received more than $5 million to support seven research projects investigating issues ranging from children's diets to bushfire behaviour.

The Federal Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr today announced more than $2.1 million for UWA projects as part of the national Australian Research Council Linkage Project program.

UWA received 53 per cent of the State's funding, with the remainder shared by two other State universities.

A further $3.08 million will come to UWA from collaborating partner organisations including Chevron Australia, Gascoyne Table Grape Growers Association and Perth Zoo.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said the University's continued dominance in gaining research funding in Western Australia was a direct result of the high calibre of researchers it attracts.

"This latest funding allocation will ensure research at the University continues to advance important benefits for both our national and international community," Professor Robson said.

UWA research funded under Round 2 of the ARC Linkage Projects :

  • Simulation technology for modelling extreme bushfire behaviour.
  • Animals on the move - an integrated approach to selecting conservation reserves under climate change.
  • Investigating the indirect effects of child- targeted food promotion on children's diets.
  • Mechanisms and manipulation of seed dormancy maintenance in annual ryegrass and other weed species.
  • A multidisciplinary study of the Karoo Basin: chronology of a mass extinction, configuration of a supercontinent.
  • Influence of high temperature on phenology, metabolism and the fate of axillary buds and inflorescences in grapevine.
