UWA Publishing title shortlisted for Barbara Jefferis Award

UWA Publishing author Simone Lazaroo has been shortlisted for the 2011 Barbara Jefferis Award.



Simone's novel Sustenance is set in the Elsewhere Hotel on an island renowned for its hospitality and beauty, where the Balinese staff and their Western guests are unexpectedly taken hostage.

During the overnight siege, the hotel's cook, Perpetua de Mello, is compelled by the crisis to provide spiritual and physical sustenance as best she can to the guests, staff and their poorly nourished captors.

In-house designer at UWA Publishing, Anna Maley-Fadgyas, has made the shortlist for this year's Australian Publishing Association's Book Design Awards.

Anna was shortlisted in the best designed cover of the year category for her design of the book An Everyday Transience: The Urban Imaginary of Goldfields Photographer John Joseph Dwyer.

UWA Publishing is delighted to have ten writers featuring in the Perth Writers' Festival in March.

Raimond Gaita (Gaza: Morality, Law and Politics) will be discussing the issues surrounding the 2008 invasion of Gaza at ‘Gaza: Zionism & Anti-zionism' on Saturday March 5, from 2-3pm in The University Club Theatre.

Ian Reid (The End of Longing) and Simone Lazaroo (Sustenance) will be reading from their novels at ‘Shared Readings' on Sunday 6 March, from 5-6pm in the Dolphin Theatre.

UWA Publishing title, "It's Still In My Heart, This Is My Country:" The Single Noongar Claim History, has won the Human Rights Award for Literature (non-fiction).



UWAP Director, Terri-ann White congratulated John Host, Chris Owen, and all those involved in the production of this very important work of social commentary.

The book presents substantial evidence detailing the history, customs and laws of the Noongar people, their relationship to their land, their rights and interests, and their survival against great odds - from colonization to the present day.

The UWA Publishing cookbook Degustation: A Master Chef's Life through Menus has been crowned Kinokuniya Cookbook of the Year from over 40 Australian food titles.

Written by renowned chef Alain Fabrègues, this intricately designed cookbook is presented in many parts - each a complimentary element in the journey through 45 years of culinary knowledge, from Bordeaux, France to Mundaring, Western Australia.

UWA Press Director Terri-ann White said she was delighted with the book's success.

Acclaimed poet Emily Ballou has been shortlisted for the 2010 NSW Premier's Literary Award for her book, The Darwin Poems.

Ballou won the Wesley Michael Wright Prize for Poetry earlier this year and has been shortlisted and highly commended for a number of other poetry awards. Published by UWA Publishing, The Darwin Poems is Ballou's sensitive and beautifully imagined verse-portrait of Charles Darwin's life.

Theo Kalogeracos, author of the stunning pizza cookbook - Theo and Co: The Search for the Perfect Pizza - has been awarded the title of world's best pizza maker at the 2010 World Champion Pizza Making Competition in Las Vegas.

The contest consisted of a ‘blind’ bake‐off between the first and second place getters of the event’s Traditional and Non‐Traditional pizza competition categories.

The Fellowship of Australian Writers has Highly Commended UWA Publishing title, The Darwin Poems, as part of their National Literary Awards.

Written by Emily Ballou, The Darwin Poems is a journey into the life of Charles Darwin through poetry. Emily separates the man from the legend, bringing to light the textures of his work and dreams, the noise and touch of his family and his inner doubts and questions.

The Darwin Poems also recently won the 2009 Wesley Michael Wright Prize for Poetry.
