Congratulations to Professor Stephen Powles, Professor Graeme Hankey, Adjunct Professor Mark Chase, Professor Richard Hobbs, Professor Rajeev Varshney and Professor Ian Small for being included on the 2017 Web of Science Highly Cited Researchers list.

Ranking in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in Web of Science, inclusion on this list represents researchers whose work is making a positive impact on society.

Standard IT maintenance window being introduced in December

Starting Sunday December 3, Uni IT will introduce a standard IT maintenance window, which going forward, will reoccur on the first Sunday of each month from 5am-11am. Major maintenance and upgrades to IT systems and services will be performed during this window. 

This does not mean there will be a full outage to all IT services during this window however, we would like to advise staff to plan activities around the maintenance window if they are able. 

Leave loading pay and payroll deadlines

Leave Loading Pay

The annual recreation leave loading will be paid on Friday 8 December 2017 (pay 18-12).

Annual leave loading of 17.5% of four weeks' salary per calendar year (up to a maximum amount of $1,637.20) is payable to staff other than casuals. Staff who commenced after 1 January 2017 will be paid a pro rata annual leave loading for the year.

UWA-Chevron collaboration wins award

The University of Western Australia in partnership with Chevron Australia last night won the 2017 BHERT (Business/Higher Education Round Table) ‘Outstanding Collaboration in Research and Development Award’, presented at a gala dinner at the Park Hyatt in Melbourne. 

UWA’s Director of Business Development and Innovation, Mark Stickells said that UWA has enjoyed a successful and productive collaboration with Chevron for more than 15 years.

UWA’s annual Staff Sports day has wrapped for another year with around 500 participants taking on the heat in a fun-filled day.

Riley Oval was awash with colour, as competitors dressed in red, blue, yellow, green and purple depending on which team they were representing. Health and Medical Sciences’ blue oasis themed marquee was judged the best on the day.

University Christmas closedown period

This year the University closedown period is from 12 noon Friday, 22 December 2017, with the University re-opening on Thursday, 4 January 2018.

As per usual practice, on Friday 22 December 2017, all areas are required to remain open and public counters staffed until 12 noon. Clear signage should be placed on counters indicating the dates the University is closed for business. After 12 noon all staff may proceed on leave.  Staff planning to take leave on 22 December will need to submit an application for a full day’s leave.

The pilot program will help you save time, reduce administrative uncertainty and improve the quality of your application.

All UWA researchers are invited to register for the program's series of workshops from November 2017 to March 2018. There are over 20 sessions addressing different parts of the application process.

For Anas Ghadouani, Professor of Environmental Engineering, solving the world’s water problems starts with looking at ways to reduce waste. It’s a unique approach to tackle one of the world’s biggest challenges, and was the theme of his talk at TEDxPerth last Saturday.

Growing up in Morocco, in a family of academics, Anas has fond memories of his family hosting visitors and the variety of interesting topics discussed.

Student athletes achieve highest honour

Last week the University recognised its highest achieving athletes at the annual Blues awards, a tradition that stretches back to 1921.

These awards are considered the highest honour universities can bestow upon outstanding student athletes for not only their athletic abilities but their contributions to the university and their respective clubs throughout the year.

Ian Fitzpatrick, UWA Sport General Manager says the Blues are a worldwide university sporting tradition, and one of the most prestigious at UWA.

Professor Ray Willis, Emeritus Professor Alan Harvey, Professor Anas Ghadouani and Ian Dunican will all gives talks at the event.
