Paul Johnson grew up in England on a solid diet of sci-fi blockbusters like Star Wars and Star Trek, which have fired his imagination to the point where he wants to write his own futuristic novel one day. 

For now, FABLE’s Financial and Staff Resources Manager dabbles in writing short stories, so that in retirement he’ll be ready for the challenge.

A self-proclaimed ‘serial volunteer’, Fadzi Whande, UWA's Inclusion and Diversity Manager spends as much time volunteering as she does working. A single mum to two boys, she has also instilled her love of volunteering in them.

Six months after joining the United Nations Association of Western Australia, Fadzi became the head of the National Human Rights Program, a voluntary position she holds as well as her full-time position at UWA.

“I’m driven by a sense of always wanting to give back to the community and leaving the world in a better place than I found it.”

Nominations are now invited for the award of a Chancellor’s Medal at Graduation Ceremonies in 2019.

A number of people make outstanding contributions to the University in a variety of ways.  It is the wish of the Senate that the contributions of these people should be recognised through the award of a Chancellor’s Medal.  Decisions on awarding of the medals will be made in accordance with the guidelines appended to Statute 14: Granting and Conferring of Degrees and Diplomas.  These guidelines are reproduced below for your ready reference.

Professor James Trevelyan recognised at Western Australian of the Year awards

Professor James Trevelyan was recognised at the Western Australian of the Year awards last week winning the professions category.

Professor Trevelyan has been an engineer, researcher and educator since 1971, and is a current Winthrop Professor in the School of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, as well as a Fellow of Engineers Australia. He practices as a mechanical and mechatronics engineer and his main area of research is on engineering practice, and he teaches design, sustainability, engineering practice and project management.

It was through his mother’s music teacher, Sir Frank Callaway, that Graeme Gilling first heard about the then School of Music at UWA.

Inspired by Frank to make the move from New Zealand, Graeme joined the School to pursue postgraduate studies in collaborative piano with Professor Roger Smalley. A little over three decades on, Graeme is now Head of Performance and Keyboard Studies at the Conservatorium of Music and inspiring the next generation of musicians.

Congratulations to Professor David Haig from the School of Earth Sciences for being awarded the Gibb Maitland Medal. The Medal is awarded for substantial contributions to geoscience in Western Australia, with particular consideration given to contributions that relate to the occurrence or discovery of mineral resources.

UWA will host an exhibition stall at the Perth Science Festival on Saturday 18 August and Sunday 19 August at the Claremont Showgrounds (10am-5pm). We are looking for engaging, interactive, hands-on science activities, suitable for a primary school and family audience that can be part of our stall and demonstrate how fun science can be.

If you or your area would like to be part of the festival atmosphere and carry out an exciting science activity, please contact Rilana Ostheim by Friday 1 June to discuss your ideas. A commitment of at least one day is required.
