A refugee from war-torn Afghanistan who is studying law, science and arts at The University of Western Australia has been named 2013 Young Australian of the Year.

On Thursday 22 November 2012 the University of Western Australia’s Communications and Media Studies department hosted the ‘Stories from the Silver Screen’ Showcase Screening. Representing the culmination of three years hard work, the gala event displayed what the most creative and talented Communications and Media Studies students at the University accomplished.
 
This year the event was held at the art-deco Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley. Guests were invited to spend the night watching short movies that have been produced, directed, filmed and edited by the students.
