Six years after the launch of a ground-breaking program to create an understanding and acceptance of sexual diversity on campus, The University of Western Australia's ‘ Ally program' has seen a shift in attitudes across campus.

UWA has released an evaluation report of the early years of the program, the first of its kind in an Australian university, which has now been emulated in 11 other universities around the country.

Those who took part in the program have reported that they are now more likely to raise gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) issues in general conversation and were more prepared to actively confront discrimination or inappropriate language or behaviour.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said the Ally Network had broken new ground within the higher education sector by identifying and addressing issues for GLBTI students and staff.

"We know that diversity contributes to campus life, as well as enriching the experiences of staff and students," Professor Robson said.  "It is important for us to re-emphasise our commitment to diversity, highlighting the positive creative energy that flows from environments that are free from intolerance, bigotry and prejudice."

UWA Equity and Diversity Manager Beverley Hill said more than 250 staff and students had identified as Allies.

"A key driver for this project has been the training and development of a network of Allies - staff and students - who are prepared to align themselves with and advocate on behalf of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex staff and students," Ms Hill said.

Ms Hill said the program had attracted considerable interest from trade unions and other organisations that are committed to advancing the workplace diversity agenda, including IBM Australia.  The three other WA public universities have adopted the program.

Visible symbols of the University's commitment include the flying of the rainbow flag for the last week of WA Pride month each year at an intersection passed by more than 50,000 cars a week, as well as signs and badges worn by allies.
