Two topics you're advised never to raise at a dinner party will be the subject of a lecture at The University of Western Australia by former WA Premier, Geoff Gallop.

Director of the Graduate School of Government at the University of Sydney, Professor Gallop will deliver his lecture - Religion and Politics: Trusted Friends or Sworn Enemies - after an introduction by Kim Beazley, UWA's Professor of Political Science and Industrial Relations.

Does religion free politics from relativism and cynicism or does it poison with fear and intolerance?  The lecture explores the implications of these questions.

WHAT: Free public lecture by Professor Geoff Gallop

WHEN: 6pm, Thursday, July 3

WHERE: UWA's Social Science Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Arts building, off Hackett entrance 1
