The Competencies of Engineering Graduates (CEG) Project is being undertaken within the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics to develop an instrument for surveying workplace supervisors to profile the generic competencies of engineering graduates. This will help to keep engineering courses aligned with industry requirements. The study is being conducted as a PhD project by Ms Sally Male, supervised by Professor Mark Bush and Dr Elaine Chapman.

The first large scale survey in the CEG Project profiled the work and competencies of established engineers, that is, engineers with 5 to 20 years experience. The CEG Project Advisory Committee and the Faculty Advisory Board provided valuable advice during the survey development. The CEG team is grateful to the many graduates for their assistance with the survey participants testing questionnaire. Over 300 volunteers participated in the survey. Congratulations to Ms Liesl Smithers, winner of the ipod.
Sally is currently analysing the results of the survey of established engineers. The competencies that received the highest average ratings of importance included communication, self-management, teamwork, interaction with people in diverse disciplines/professions/trades, commitment to doing one’s best, problem-solving and honesty.

The next stage of the project will survey senior engineers.
