‘Remembering Feminism's Queer Pasts: Emotional and Political Landscapes of the Cold War'; ‘Shock, Boredom and Iconography of Sexual Violence in Frontier Films'; and ‘Mothers of Sin: Indigenous Women's Perceptions of their Identity and Sexuality' - these are just some of the intriguing subjects under discussion at an international conference starting at The University of Western Australia soon.

In conjunction with the biennial conference of the Australian Women's and Gender Studies Association, hosted by the University's Women's Studies program, are two new art exhibitions, an evening of feminist experimental short films and another of feminist theatre.

Photographer Panizza Allmark and printmaker Laurel Nannup's shows will be opened in the University Club Gallery on the evening before the conference gets underway at the Club from 9am on Wednesday July 9.

The conference's keynote speakers, whose topics are listed above, are Professor Sasha Roseneil from the Birbeck Institute, University of London; Dr Felicity Collins of LaTrobe University; and Dr Pat Dudgeon of UWA.

Popular Perth writer and academic Liz Byrski is another presenter, with a paper titled ‘War Work as Emotional Labour:  Women Up Close And Personal with McIndoe's Guinea Pigs'.

Conference organiser, Associate Professor Alison Bartlett, said representatives from the media were welcome, although they would need to register at the desk in the foyer to attend any of the sessions and should first contact Susan Takao, of UWA's Institute of Advanced Studies.

The conference runs until Friday July 11.
