The University of Western Australia welcomes the State Government announcement of a new children's hospital and women's hospital to be built alongside Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Nedlands.

The co-location of the two hospitals with the central teaching hospital will ensure that the highest standard of service can be provided for WA's children and mothers - in acute and diagnostic services for women, neonatal care and paediatric services.

It will also help to maintain the high standards of teaching and research related to children and their mothers in a tertiary hospital setting.

Professor Alan Robson, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Western Australia, said the University whole-heartedly supported the redevelopment program.

"This is an exciting milestone in the history of the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre," Professor Robson said.  "The broader redevelopment program highlighted by Mr McGinty today will deliver a host of new facilities including extensive research facilities.  This will enable us to continue to attract and retain the world's brightest medical researchers in Western Australia."

"The University contributed the land for the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre more than 40 years ago, and has an established teaching and research presence on the site to complement and enhance the provision of medical treatment.  The redevelopment of the site as the central hub for the teaching of medicine and related sciences has prompted the University to invest millions of dollars in the infrastructure and facilities needed to support the State's health needs and engage in life-saving research.

"The redevelopment program will also cement the already strong links between The University of Western Australia and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.  These links provide enormous benefits to both organisations.  But they also deliver real benefits to patients ensuring they benefit from any medical breakthroughs as quickly as possible."
