From May 16-20 UWA Motorsport (UWAM) participated in the Formula SAE East competition in Romeo, Michigan. It was another world class performance from the team as they finished 2nd overall with 857 points behind the University of Wisconsin-Madison at 877 points out of a maximum of 1000 points.

The excellent placing by the team was coupled by winning nine technical awards for engineering design and innovation, the most for any of the 130 university teams. The result was even sweeter as UWA was the sole Australian entry in the international field.
The result in Detroit is testament to the quality of the 2006 vehicle and team which also finished 2nd overall in the Australasian competition in December. The UWA Motorsport team narrowly missed out on overall honours in the Australasian competition, finishing second to local favourites RMIT.

In August, UWAM held the ‘UWAM06 Celebration evening’, to present the vehicle and awards won during their 2006 campaign to all the loyal sponsors and supporters who helped make the team a success. Professor Mark Bush, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, congratulated the team and sponsors on behalf of the University and read a letter of congratulations from The Honourable Alan Carpenter MLA, Premier of Western Australia. Karl Reindler, former A1GP race driver and Chairman of Wesfarmers, Mr Trevor Eastwood were among the guests of friends and family who helped celebrated the team’s marvellous achievements.

The UWA Motorsport team looks forward to continuing their success in FSAE with their new UWAM 2007 vehicle to be launched in late November. The vehicle will be competing in the 2007 Formula SAE Australasian competition in Victoria from 13-16 December. To keep track of the team’s progress, please visit the UWA Motorsport website .
