September 10 heralded the graduation of the first 28 students from the Master of Pharmacy course.

All Prizes were awarded for the first time with many sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry and others by organisations and individuals involved in the pharmacy discipline. A special award - the Gladys Heedes Medal - sponsored on an annual basis by Pharmaceutical Defence Limited for the top student in the Master of Pharmacy course, was awarded to Christel Burgess. Gladys Heedes, after whom the award is named, was a special guest at the function and personally presented the medal to Christel.

Associate Professor Alan Everett, Director of the Masters of Pharmacy Program, was recognised as the prime mover, instigator and designer of the course. He facilitated the approval process and worked tirelessly to ensure the course was one of quality. Professor Everett thanked those who had contributed to the establishment of the student prizes and industry partners and colleagues for their willingness to accommodate the pharmacy students on their practicum attachments. He also congratulated students on the successful completion of their course.

Also in September, graduands received their certificates from Chancellor Michael Chaney at the formal Science Graduation Ceremony in Winthrop Hall. The graduates are now undertaking their professional qualifying year, and once completed, they will be able to practice as fully fledged pharmacists. Pharmacy is currently enjoying its new facilities in the revamped Biochemistry building, officially opened recently by the Governor.
