The University of Western Australia's School of Music is committed to bringing music into the community with a new season of musical concerts and classes beginning soon.

Carl Orff's decadent, dramatic and popular work, ‘Carmina Burana', will start the season off in Winthrop Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, April 19.

More than 250 of the State's finest young musicians will be joined by acclaimed soloists Sara Macliver, Robert Hofmann and Andrew Sutherland in the musical extravaganza composed by Orff in the 1930s and based on a collection of medieval poems originally written to be sung and accompanied by instruments and magical images.

Also taking part in this University Music Society concert will be members of the Junior Music School's Firebird Choir, representing UWA Music's Discover Music outreach program.

This program will be expanded in 2008, with the addition of classes for adolescents (Get Into Music) and adults (Discover the Music in You).

As well, visiting artists such as pianist Piers Lane (UK), Australian jazz legend Paul Grabovsky, the Grainger Quartet and WASO concertmaster John Harding will give performances and master classes throughout the year.
