The School of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) at UWA has made a significant contribution to WA school children’s learning through its Awesome Animations and Animatronics Outreach Programme.

The programme has been running since November 2005 with the goal of inspiring a love for the sciences among school children, ranging in ages from Pre-Primary through to Year 12. This is achieved by bringing to their classrooms the incredible diversity present in computer science, from bushfire spread research to exploring the wonders of the universe, artificial intelligence, robotics, animatronics and related programming.

In 2006 the outreach programme attended fifty schools while particpating at major events such as the Robo-City Event in Forrest Place; Shopping Trolley Science at the Galleria Morley; the Regional Science Fair in Esperance; the Triple S Science Fair in Mount Lawley and the Go Girl Go For IT event at Murdoch.

The Awesome Animations and Animatronics Outreach Programme has received strong support from a commited team of 31 staff and PhD students, the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics and the Vice-Chancellery.

Recently, the programme has been nominated for state and national science communication awards. The School of Computer Science and Software Engineering welcomes schools, educators and career counselors to take advantage of this free programme.
