Twenty two Chinese students in the 2006 UWA Short Term Study Program celebrated their memorable five-week stay with a farewell function last month.

The students' activities at UWA included visits to the Centre of Microscopy and Microanalysis, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Plant Energy Biology, the Confucius Institute and the Gravity Wave Discovery Centre.

They also studied a range of academic courses and English language at the University.

Dr Jan Dook and Dr Nancy Longnecker helped the students hone their science communication skills, Dr Martin Forsey helped them develop a deeper understanding of Australian culture and Ms Mao Hongqi held Chinese cultural and language seminars.

The program aims to raise the profile of UWA in China and influence visiting students' postgraduate study decisions, as well as giving the visitors opportunities to mix with UWA students.

The visitors all reported that the UWA staff and students were fantastic to work with, and most praised staff and the UWA facilities.

Professor Stewart, Faculty Dean and Director of International Strategy, said closer interaction between the two countries and the universities would lead to research collaboration and opportunities for all staff and students.

"The Short Term Study Program is a very important part of this process," he said.
