The University of Western Australia has officially opened its new Podiatry Clinic, offering accessible, affordable podiatric services to the community.

The clinic offers general podiatry care, paediatric foot assessment, treatment for sports injuries of the foot and ankle, the prescription and manufacture of foot orthoses, diabetic foot assessment, diabetic wound management and minor podiatric surgery.

Professor Paul Norman, Head of the School of Surgery and Pathology at UWA, said patients were seen by Podiatric Medicine students under the direct supervision of experienced podiatrists at reduced fees.

“The 10-patient chair clinic is fitted out with the latest diagnostic and treatment equipment and includes a demonstration area, sterilisation room, foot orthotics workshop and a large gait analysis laboratory,” he said.

UWA was able to set up the clinic with a $1 million contribution from the WA Health Department and Director-General Neale Fong will formally open the centre later this afternoon.

The clinic builds on the successful introduction of a Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine program at UWA last year – the first podiatry course in Australasia to be offered within a university medicine facility.

The clinic is at UWA’s Park Avenue building on the corner of Park and Crawley avenues, Crawley.
