Science research and industry links were the subject of the day when the Hon Francis Logan, Minister for Energy, Science and Innovation, visited the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences on 5th July. The Minister had a sneak preview of the sapphire oscillators in the School of Physics and the new gravity gradiometer, a multi-million dollar research project funded by Rio Tinto.

UWA's Physics workshop is already one of the best in Australia for precision machining. With the introduction of the new gravity gradiometer project, the School of Physics secured its standing as the best place in Australia for precision machining without equal commercially, or in the University sector.

The Minister also visited the ARC Centre for Plant Energy Biology – yet another one of Australia's best science research facility based at UWA. As the only Australian Minister for Energy, Science and Innovation, Minister Logan is proud of Western Australia's lead in these research areas. At the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences we are also proud of our achievements in these research areas.
