The University of Western Australia's Director of the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis, Winthrop Professor David Sampson, has been elected a Fellow of the prestigious international society for optics and photonics, SPIE.
Former University of Western Australia Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Alan Robson, and leading women's and children's health expert, Winthrop Professor John Newnham, are among UWA academics and graduates to be awarded 2013 Queen's Birthday Honours.
UWA Economics student Adam Morris will be able to invest more time in his studies with the help of ATCO Australia.
Adam, the 2013 recipient of the ATCO Australia Undergraduate Scholarship, said receiving the $10,000 scholarship would allow him to focus more on his studies.
"Receiving the scholarship will allow me to allocate more hours to my studies that would have otherwise been allocated to part-time work. I will now be able to spend an adequate amount of time studying while being able to support my family," Adam said.
The life work, passion and achievements of a scientist with more than 20 years' experience in researching the ecology and conservation of Australian native plants and ecosystems have been recognised by one of the world's most prestigious scientific societies.
The evening began with a wonderful concert which highlighted the talents of some gifted young Western Australian musicians and speech performers. All gave outstanding technical, entertaining and musical (in the case of the instruments) performances.
For the third year in a row, The University of Western Australia was recognised this week as one of the nation's best workplaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people in Australia's first Top 10 Employers List for LGBT employees.
