Paul Johnson grew up in England on a solid diet of sci-fi blockbusters like Star Wars and Star Trek, which have fired his imagination to the point where he wants to write his own futuristic novel one day.
For now, FABLE’s Financial and Staff Resources Manager dabbles in writing short stories, so that in retirement he’ll be ready for the challenge.
“Part of the attraction of Science Fiction is seeing it cross over into reality, like Star Trek’s communicators helping to inspire modern mobile phones and their tablet-like information displays becoming iPads.
If you’re travelling overseas on UWA business, you can apply for additional expense funds to extend your trip and help support the University’s Internationalisation Strategy by engaging in activities to raise UWA's profile.
Funding is available for professional and academic staff and includes the below activities:
One of the State’s top mining executives, a former Australian cricketer and educator and a world-leading breast cancer surgeon are among 18 graduates and three staff members of The University of Western Australia who have been recognised in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
A self-proclaimed ‘serial volunteer’, Fadzi Whande, UWA's Inclusion and Diversity Manager spends as much time volunteering as she does working. A single mum to two boys, she has also instilled her love of volunteering in them.
Six months after joining the United Nations Association of Western Australia, Fadzi became the head of the National Human Rights Program, a voluntary position she holds as well as her full-time position at UWA.
“I’m driven by a sense of always wanting to give back to the community and leaving the world in a better place than I found it.”
Nominations are now invited for the award of a Chancellor’s Medal at Graduation Ceremonies in 2019.
A number of people make outstanding contributions to the University in a variety of ways. It is the wish of the Senate that the contributions of these people should be recognised through the award of a Chancellor’s Medal. Decisions on awarding of the medals will be made in accordance with the guidelines appended to Statute 14: Granting and Conferring of Degrees and Diplomas. These guidelines are reproduced below for your ready reference.
Nominations for Honorary Doctorates for award at Graduation Ceremonies in 2019 are now invited. Nominations may only be submitted by members of the Academic Board or Senate. Other members of the University community who have suggestions for nominations should discuss their proposals with a member of the Board or the Senate. (Details of the membership of these bodies are available here and here).
You’ve told us that information for staff is hard to find and often out-of-date. We’ve listened! The UWA Staff Intranet is currently under development and we are recruiting a group of volunteers to take part in a six-week pilot to test the system and provide feedback.
