Welcome to the e-newsletter for staff in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. The ECM Faculty Focus will keep you regularly informed of interesting activities, successes and events. In this issue, I would like to draw your attention to the launch of the Strategic Review 2009. This internal review will provide an opportunity for all staff to contribute to our future directions. I encourage you to attend the launch and participate in this exciting endeavour, as with your input and support we can work together to build on and strengthen our reputation for teaching, learning and research excellence.
Professor Caroline Baillie has been appointed as UWA’s first Chair of Engineering Education. Professor Baillie's most recent position was Professor and Dupont Canada Chair in Engineering Education Research and Development, Faculty of Applied Science, Queens University, Ontario, Canada. She has a PhD from the University of Surrey in Materials Science and Engineering.
The Faculty is pleased to congratulate Professor Mark Cassidy Director of the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS), who has been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the offshore oil and gas industry at an international level in the analysis of mobile drilling rigs, foundations and pipelines.
The Faculty is pleased to acknowledge Karina Congdon who was recently awarded the WA Young Water Professional of the Year. This highly esteemed award is presented to an outstanding young water professional who has demonstrated their commitment to the water profession and shown exceptional achievement in the early stages of their career.
The Faculty wishes to offer our congratulations to both Emeritus Professor Brian Stone and Dr Nathan Scott for winning the best paper award for their presentation “Some Reflections on On-line Tutoring and Plagiarism” at the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE) conference.
The Faculty is delighted to offer our congratulations to 2008 Environmental Engineering graduate, Alison Barrett-Lennard for winning the State Australian Water Association (AWA) Undergraduate of the Year Award. As a result of an engaging presentation by Alison, the School of Environmental Systems Engineering can now display the perpetual trophy, in recognition of another of their students' outstanding achievements.
The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative is likely to have a substantial impact on the Faculty and the University in the future. The ARC has released the indicators that will be used to support the evaluation of research excellence in the ERA initiative.
There are a range of expanded and exciting activities for staff and students in O Week, 16- 20 February 2009. Staff in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics are encouraged to attend the following activities to meet our commencing students and help to make them feel welcome.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, Professor David Smith, has today launched a Strategic Review of the Faculty. This consultative and open review will encompass a wide ranging examination of the Faculty's activities, and provide the opportunity for all staff to have a say in the future direction of the Faculty.
