As the price of oil goes up, it becomes worth the cost for resource companies to spend billions of dollars exploring and drilling in deeper and deeper water.

And the huge financial cost is only the start of a host of differences between drilling in relatively shallow water and exploring the deeper water - with seabeds more than 500 metres below the surface.

The century of cheap energy is behind us, according to an international energy expert visiting The University of Western Australia.

Lord Ron Oxburgh is Chairman of Falck Renewables, and an advisor on environment and energy to the Government of Singapore, Climate Change Capital and Deutschebank. A geologist, he was Chairman of Shell Petroleum UK.

Applications for the second round of the 2010 Endeavour Awards for Postgraduate students and Postdoctoral researchers will open on 1 December 2009 and close on 30 January 2010 for funding in 2010. The 2011 round will open in April 2010.  The success rates for many of these awards are very high!
