Callum Jones is currently completing his Honours year in Economics at the University of Western Australia.  His thesis, supervised by Professor Ken Clements, investigates and applies a number of economic models on housing prices.  For Callum, academic life has been a rewarding journey. To support his Honours research he was awarded the C.A. Vargovic Memorial Bursary by the Business School, and the Brian Gray Memorial Scholarship by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority.  Furthermore, he was chosen by the University of New South Wales to present a progress report on his honours research at the 2008 National Honours Colloquium in Sydney.  With the support of Dr. Michael McLure, Callum attended the 2008 History of Economic Thought Society of Australia Conference in Parramatta, NSW, as a Mannkal Economics Education Foundation Scholar during the mid-year break.  Later in the year, Callum participated in the Liberty and Society conference, organised by the Centre for Independent Studies.  The aim of the conference was to introduce classical liberal ideas, which it did very well.

Finally, as a runner up in the international 2008 Friedrich von Hayek Essay Contest award, Callum was fortunate enough to attend the 60th Anniversary Meeting of the Mont Pelerin Society in Tokyo, Japan in September.  The conference brought together a number of academics, business people, and government figures from around the world.   Most notable was the attendance of Nobel Prize winning economists, Professor Gary Becker and Professor Myron Scholes.
Callum Jones is not only a worthy prize winner, but also a true example of the high caliber of students at UWA.  We would like to thank Callum for representing UWA and commend him on his fine efforts.  Thank you to all the students and alumni that continue to make the University of Western Australia proud.
