An impressive line up of experts from Australia and overseas will convene at The University of Western Australia later this week to explore the complex security challenges Australia and Asia may face as active players in the major global matters.

A symposium entitled:  ‘Australia and Asia: Issues of Global Security’ will be presented by UWA’s Institute of Advanced Studies on Friday, August 17, 2007, in UWA’s University Club Case Study Room.

Themes will focus on Australia and Asia’s position in one of the fastest changing regions and what this means in terms of their security future.

The choices Australia makes now will shape not only its own security future but in many ways will impact on that of the Asian region as well.

Alongside the risks associated with armed conflict between nations, Australian policy makers must contend with terrorism, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, global warming, and the risk of potentially devastating epidemics such as avian influenza.

A free public lecture entitled ‘Is Australia a great power?’ will be presented by Professor Michael Wesley, Director, Griffith Asia Institute, Griffith University preceding the symposium on Thursday, 16 August 2007 at 6pm in the Geography Lecture Theatre 1.
