Imagine walking inside a beautiful cathedral that exists only in virtual space or inspecting a 3D display home from every angle on a smart phone or digital tablet in the comfort of your home or office.

Construction is now complete on the white curvilinear Performance Shell which is located in the newly-developed urban centre of South Hedland. The project, which is part of a major infrastructure scheme for the Pilbara Cities Initiative, was officially opened by the Minister for Regional Development & Lands, Hon Brendon Grylls MLA, in December.

The four day annual Summer School Studio was held this month for Year 12 students from WA schools. Aimed at students interested in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design, the studio provides a taste of life as a Bachelor of Design student.

On 3 November the winners of the Martumili Architectural Competition were announced by Associate Professor Patric de Villiers at a showcase event at the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts (ALVA).

The limited design competition for an innovative Arts and Gallery Facility for Martumili Artists in Newman, WA was held by the Martumili Creative Indigenous Partnership, BHP Billiton, the WA Government, the Shire of East Pilbara and ALVA.

During the mid-semester break, 19 students from the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts (ALVA) travelled to Bali as part of the inaugural Bali Art Studio. The studio was offered as an elective unit and was taken by students studying Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Fine Arts.

In a significant ceremony the Rector of Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Profesor Dr I Wayan Rai, along with Ibu Made Rinu the Dekan of the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD), signed an agreement of collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts (ALVA).

Six final year, architecture, landscape architecture and urban design students from The University of Western Australia (UWA) are taking a fresh look at ways to develop built form, infrastructure and landscape design at Dampier in the State's north west.

With Perth's population projected to reach 3.5 million by 2050, it's time to think big about the planning challenges facing us and the policy responses needed to deal with these challenges, according to Associate Professor Paul Maginn, organiser of UWA's annual Stephenson Hepburn Oration to be held on 16 March.
