Nat Fyfe is a footballing superstar.
He is also an MBA student at UWA.
In 2019, not surprisingly, having pocketed his second Brownlow Medal as the AFL’s best player, he was also UWA’s Convocation Sports Star of the Year.
With Nat unable to attend the celebratory dinner late in 2019 due to overseas travel it was up to Warden Dr Doug McGhie to meet with Nat to present his award.
It’s a busy life as an AFL team captain, but Nat and Doug found time early in February 2020 to get together for the award presentation at the Dockers’ impressive venue at Cockburn Central. They also shared a few thoughts about UWA’s MBA, which Doug completed before Nat was born, but of which he still has many fond memories and from which he gained valuable insights and has lifelong friends.
Nat discussed how he is doing one unit a semester and is really enjoying the interaction with his fellow class members, of which he is one of the youngest. He especially noted a love for the leadership theory and studies.
He is about half way through the twelve-unit program, so a couple of years to finish, but he does have other pressing matters in his life. Balancing a busy training and game schedule with classes and study is just a part of life for Nat, a very well organised young man.
A long time Eagles member, Doug wished Nat and Fremantle the best of success for coming seasons, and they agreed the ultimate AFL Grand Final match would be the Dockers playing the Eagles, happy to accept the game on neutral ground at the MCG.
Nat accepted the framed certificate that recognises his UWA achievement, remarking it was the first prize he had won at UWA. Generously, he declined the cash prize associated with the award, and asked that it be used to reward another deserving sportsperson at UWA.
Thank you, Nat, well done and good luck from Convocation!
