A pharmacy student at The University of Western Australia has been named Pharmacy Student of the Year at an awards ceremony in Sydney.

Alice Hashiguchi, 22, from Applecross, who is in her second year of a Master of Pharmacy at UWA, was judged the top student among a strong field of finalists from James Cook University, University of Queensland, University of Tasmania and Monash University.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) Mylan Pharmacy Student of the Year award was announced at the PSA 2019 conference dinner in Sydney last weekend.

Sponsored by global pharmaceutical company Mylan, the award winner receives the National Travel Prize for pharmacy-specific education of an expenses-paid trip to a pharmacy conference.

Alice said she felt very honoured and grateful to win the prize and was excited about attending an international pharmacy conference.

“I’d like to thank my lecturers and fellow students for supporting me through this competition, as well as PSA and Mylan for hosting and sponsoring the event,” she said.

Alice enrolled in the Master of Pharmacy course after completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in synthetic chemistry and physiology at UWA. She plans to undertake an internship next year at a hospital in Western Australia.

The Master of Pharmacy program provides a direct pathway to a professional postgraduate qualification in pharmacy for registration as a pharmacist in Australia.

A former student at Iona Presentation College, Alice was born in Perth to Japanese parents and is fluent in Japanese and English.
