The University of Western Australia has been awarded Platinum status and listed in the top five employers for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, asexual (LGBTIQA+) inclusion in the 2019 Australian Workplace Equality Index.

UWA achieved Platinum status alongside Accenture, ANZ Australia and Lend Lease Group. UWA is the only WA university to be consistently included in the top 10 list since the awards inception in 2011.

The index, which provides a national benchmark for LGBTIQA+ workplace inclusion, is designed to gauge the impact of inclusion initiatives on the culture of organisations.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater said it was a great achievement for UWA to be recognised as an employer of choice for diversity and inclusion.

“Building a culture of respect where diversity is celebrated and staff and students can achieve their full potential is a top priority for the University,” Professor Freshwater said.

“We have worked hard to develop an inclusive campus where everybody can be themselves and thrive in a supportive, nurturing environment.”

Professor Freshwater said the award was testament to the University’s work over the past decade.

Some of the key achievements include establishing Australia’s first university network for bisexual staff, students, and alumni; implementing the first study of the LGBTIQA+ student experience at an Australian university; and developing a transgender policy to protect the rights of staff and students.

The index is managed by Pride in Diversity, a not-for-profit organisation specialising in LGBTIQA+ inclusion in the Australian workplace.
