Five students from The University of Western Australia are among 38 young Australians to be awarded a Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship.

Scholarship recipients Hayley Biddle, of Beaconsfield, Ryan Malone, of Dianella, Ailish Dey, of Dalkeith,  Lara Bailey, of Kensington and Henry Lan, of Bullcreek, will have the opportunity to spend up to two semesters in China, Singapore or Hong Kong as part of their exchange.

Hayley is studying a Bachelor of Design, majoring in integrated design and Korean studies, Ryan is doing a Bachelor of Philosophy (Hons) with a direct pathway to a Master of Professional Engineering, Lara is undertaking a Bachelor of Science, majoring in geographical sciences and human geography, Ailish is doing a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in business law and Chinese studies with a direct pathway to Juris Doctor and Henry is also undertaking a Bachelor of Philosophy (Hons) with a direct pathway to Doctor of Medicine.

As part of their Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship, Hayley, Ryan, Lara and Henry have chosen to study at the National University of Singapore while Ailish has elected to undertake her exchange at Fudan University in the Chinese city of Shanghai.

The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarships are awarded annually to undergraduates who are passionate about strengthening ties between Australia and Asia. The scholarship offers recipients the opportunity to study for up to a year at a leading university in China, Singapore or Hong Kong, and includes a leadership development program, co-created with The Australian National University.

Each winner will be provided with $12,000 for coursework studies, including a leadership development program which starts with a one-week residential experience in Shanghai to provide essential skills for living and working in the region.

Scholars will also gain lifelong membership to the Westpac 100 Scholars Network, joining a select group of inspiring leaders.
