A new PhD program to connect students with industry and help them solve real world problems is being rolled out in WA.

The Industry PhD (iPhD) program, developed by CSIRO and initially piloted by the University of New South Wales, will expand into WA through a partnership led by The University of Western Australia in collaboration with CSIRO, Curtin University and Edith Cowan University.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater said while universities collaborate with industry, the iPhD program was unique in providing students with the opportunity to work on and deliver solutions to specific WA industry-based problems.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for students to engage with industry in a whole new and meaningful way,” Professor Freshwater said.

“Students will have access to industry leaders, mentors and professional development opportunities through the program to develop skills training and research that is very applied and has a direct impact on industry.

“Through the program we will be developing students who are job-ready, understand the needs of industry and have strong professional connections.”

The four-year program will provide a scholarship of $40,000 per year and includes an internship with an industry partner as well as access to CSIRO’s professional development training. The program is open to all domestic students eligible for a PhD who are interested in studying at UWA, Curtin University or ECU, with an initial focus on resources and agriculture-based projects.

CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall is excited about the expansion of the program into Western Australia.

“Solving Australia’s greatest challenges requires strong collaboration between researchers and industry, the iPhD program has proven to be highly effective in bringing together key partners to develop our talent and improve our innovation capacity,” Dr Marshall said.

“We look forward to working with Western Australian University and industry partners in developing the next generation of leaders of our innovation system and help shape a brighter future for all Australians.”
