The Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Education celebrated the success of Next Gen Resources, a team of four UWA Master of Business Administration (MBA) Flexible students who were recently awarded first place at the seventh annual Schulich International Case Competition on 23 February 2019, held at the Schulich School of Business, Toronto, Canada.

The Schulich International Case Competition provides students with the opportunity to discuss and debate real-life business challenges, drawing together practical solutions to the mining industry’s most challenging issues. Focused on sustainable value creation in mining, the competition requires students to pitch real solutions to current industry leaders and help shape the future of the mining industry.

The Next Gen Resources team, which included MBA students Melissa Grove, Josh Connor, Mark Alchin and Bayode Ero-Phillips, won the $10,000 first place competition prize for their assessment of the United Nations Sustainability Goals, in terms of their relevance and application to the contemporary and future mineral resources sector.

Using the Alcoa Corporation as the principal case study, Next Gen Resources presented their thesis 'Preserving Life Provides Positive Returns', whilst highlighting the critical importance of the UN Sustainability Goal #3, ‘Good Health and Well-being’.

Ms Grove commented on her eye-opening experience at the 2019 Schulich International Case Competition, “The competition has challenged me to be a better version of myself and to dig deep when the going gets tough, as there were certainly many challenging moments. I am inspired by how our team bonded and collaborated, with everyone making their own unique contribution. It was an eye opening experience to engage with peers and industry leaders in the international mining realm. I was so proud of our team’s efforts after the first presentation, and winning with such tough competition was just the cherry on top.” Ms Grove said.

MBA Director, Allan Trench, spoke of how valuable the competition is to UWA MBA students, “The competition provides an invaluable opportunity to showcase the analytical and communication skills students acquire from the UWA MBA course in a competitive global forum attended by business schools from around the world.”

“We are very proud of this year's Next Gen MBA team, who have built upon UWA's unparalleled success in the competition." Mr Trench said.

Remarkably, it is the third time in four visits that UWA has won the Schulich International Case Competition, with this year's team adding to last year's third-place finish by UWA.

The UWA Business School would like to thank Resource Capital Funds (RCF) for their financial support of the team's attendance at the event, as well as, the input of UWA alumni who participated in the competition in previous years.

The UWA Business School will soon host the Next Gen Resources team, where they can present their winning business case to fellow MBA students, visitors and supporters.
