On Wednesday 19 October the EZONE UWA Student Hub reached a significant milestone with a topping out ceremony held to recognise construction reaching its highest level.

The topping out ceremony is an important step for construction workers and engineers to show they have reached the milestone. “It was originally Scandinavian, where they’d put a tree on the top, but in the Irish version we put a silver coin at the highest point,” said Merv Shortt, UWA Project Manager.

The topping out milestone of EZONE UWA Student Hub marks one step closer to delivery of a revolutionary new learning, teaching, research and industry engagement space.

Professor John Dell, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences addressed the crowd, saying “EZONE UWA will provide an unparalleled student experience, building an innovative and collaborative culture based on a science, technology, engineering and mathematics capability like no other in the country.”

The project would not be possible without the generous support from BHP Iron Ore and Woodside Energy .

The EZONE UWA Student Hub, will not only strengthen and foster UWA’s ties to industry but will also transform the UWA Student Experience.

Master of Professional Engineering (Civil) student, Joel Bonsel, is currently undergoing his 12 week professional practicum on the EZONE UWA building site with Perkins. Joel was selected as a UWA student representative to place the silver coin at the highest point of the concrete core structure. The coin was provided by the Perth Mint and represents the evolution of engineering in Western Australia.

“I am extremely proud to be involved in the EZONE UWA Student Hub project and look forward to seeing how it will transform the way UWA educates students, undertakes research and engages with the community,” said Joel.

EZONE UWA Student Hub is due to open to students in Semester 1, 2020. Find out more at ezone.uwa.edu.au
