UWA Civil Engineering graduate, Xin Hou, has been awarded the 2018 Australian Institute of Traffic Planning and Management Incorporated (AITPM) Young Professional Award for Western Australia.
AITPM is the peak professional organisation for the traffic management and transport planning industry. AITPM awarded Xin because of her keen interest in pursuing a career as a transport professional.
“My interest in transportation started from a young age, I was always fascinated at how transport infrastructure can change people’s lives, from major transport infrastructure linking regional communities to cities, to active transport facilities which enables people to live more healthy and active lifestyles,” said Xin Hou (UWA Civil Engineering graduate).
Xin graduated with a Master of Professional Engineering (Civil) from UWA in 2017. Xin did her final year research project on traffic modelling, supervised by Dr. Chao Sun (Research Fellow, Planning and Transport Research Centre) and Professor Yuxia Hu (Head of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering). This research project allowed Xin to gain relevant hands on skills and connect with industry professionals.
During her studies at UWA, Xin actively sought the opportunity to work with various sectors of the transport industry including construction, government and consulting. Xin is passionate about implementing innovative measures to implement transport efficiencies beyond traditional methods. Xin is now a Graduate Transport Engineer at WSP.
All state award winners were invited to attend the AITPM National Conference held in Perth from Tuesday 24 July to Friday 27 July. Over 480 delegates from around the world attended the conference and it enabled Xin to learn more about the traffic and transport profession and provided her with fantastic networking opportunities.
Xin will now sit on the State Branch Committee as a Young Professional representative for a period of one year.
