On the evening of 19 June, at the third annual DMD Career Mentor Café, 11 dentistry alumni helped welcome 36 first year students to the UWA Dental School and the profession they are joining. Through these graduates, students experienced firsthand the UWA community of support that will be there for them for a lifetime.
Dr Jilen Patel BDS '12, who works in a multidisciplinary team providing specialist paediatric dental services to children at both the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia and Perth Children's Hospital, was an alumni mentor that night. When we spoke to Jilen after the event, he said he “felt the Career Café was an exciting and innovative opportunity for DMD students to network with dental professionals in a relaxed environment. I feel privileged to be able to exchange ideas, experiences and be a part of a fresh approach to dental and medical teaching.”
One of the students Jilen met at the Career Café was Alice Gregory BSc ’17, now in the first year of her dentistry degree. Alice had this to say, “I found speaking to the alumni really valuable. Chatting with people who are so passionate about their own careers was very inspiring. I would like to work as a general dentist, but I have always loved working with kids so I might specialise in paediatrics one day. After attending the event I definitely feel more involved with the UWA community than I did prior.”
The next UWA Dental School Career Café will take place in November, when alumni return to campus to mentor fourth year students as they prepare to head out into the workplace.
