Hockey WA has named its Under 21 teams for the upcoming 2018 National Championships in July, with five UWA student athletes named in the squads.

Both teams will be looking to build on last year’s strong performances, with the women’s team narrowly losing 2-1 to New South Wales in the Gold medal match, while the men claimed the Bronze in a thrilling shootout.

The women’s side includes Phillipa Morgan and Claudia Nielsen , as well as Jessica Butterworth in the train-ons.

All three are UWA Hockey Club players, and received UWA Full Blues at the 2017 Blues Awards.

The women’s team will be coached by South African Lindsey Wright, who brings a wealth of experience, including 200 caps, two Olympic Games, two World Cups and two Commonwealth Games during her playing career.

Meanwhile, the men’s team will include Christian Starkie , who was a member of the Gold medal-winning Youth Australian side, and Alistair Murray in the train-ons.

Former Olympian Dean Evans will take charge of the men’s team, recognising the important step this call-up is in the players’ careers.

“My key objective for the group is to find that balance between having success in the tournament and ensuring that individual players can achieve their potential and aim for higher honours.”

The 2018 U21 Australian Championship is taking place between 4 July and 11 July in Sydney, New South Wales.
