Western Power has informed the University that it has scheduled electrical works at the Crawley campus from 5am to 6pm on Monday 7 May, Wednesday 9 May and Tuesday 15 May. These works are necessary to allow Western Power to complete essential high voltage (HV) upgrades.

The following buildings will experience a power outage on Friday 4 May between midnight and 6am to allow generator cables to be connected:

  • Ken and Julie Michael
  • Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery
  • Computer Science
  • Arts
  • Octagon
  • Dolphin
  • Music
  • Somerville
  • Winthrop
  • Admin
  • Admin East
  • Hackett
  • Rec Centre

On 7, 9 and 15 May , in the buildings listed above, there will be power interruptions when the transfer over to generator and back to mains power occurs. This will be prior to 7am, and again between 5pm and 6pm, on all three days.

Staff in the above buildings are advised to take precautionary measures to ensure their activities will not be impacted by the works. It is not anticipated that other buildings will experience any outages.

Action required

It is advised that the following precautionary measures are undertaken by staff in affected buildings:

  • Advise: Ensure all staff in your area are aware of scheduled works
  • Reschedule priority activities that require electrical power for equipment and instruments during the times indicated.
  • Have a plan: Put suitable business continuity measures in place so that your area is prepared for unplanned electricity outages of both short and long durations.
  • Turn off any unnecessary electrical equipment to prevent the risk of damage from unexpected fluctuations.
  • Check : Following the works, check all electrical equipment is operating normally
  • Contact us : If you are concerned about any activities that may be impacted by power outages at these times, contact your Campus Services Manager (see below).

What to expect in affected buildings

  • Air conditioning may be turned off for periods to reduce electrical loads.
  • Generators will be installed behind the Ken and Julie Michael building, in the carpark below the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery and to the north of the Arts building. Some bays within these car parks may be blocked off during these works for safety reasons.
  • There will be some additional noise and exhaust fumes in the location where the generator is running.
