One of UWA Sport’s most popular Recreate short courses, Paddling Gold, recently celebrated 11 years of activity on the river.

Paddling Gold is designed as a friendly get-together for paddling fans over the age of 50. Participants begin their sessions with a warm up, before heading out on the Swan River.

The inaugural course was organised by instructor Colin Thorpe, and is now run by qualified Flatwater Instructors Graeme Gurney, John Wildman, Gillian Henderson, and Don Mullaley.

Over the 11 years the course has been running it has continued to increase in popularity, and now accommodates a number of regulars alongside new participants each program.

Speaking on the program, current participant Jan Beissel was full of praise.

“I would recommend Paddling Gold to anyone who wants to improve their health and well-being.

“We are a group of super friendly, like-minded people enthusiastically turning up every Tuesday to prepare the craft, then off we go to explore the wonderful Swan River from a very different perspective.”

The group learn the skills of paddling in a supportive and safe environment, and paddle by the acronym “GOLD”: Growing Old, Living Dangerously.

Congratulations to both participants and instructors on sustaining the course for so long, and good luck paddling!
